Before the end of the summer and grilling season leaves us for the cool temperatures of fall and winter, I’m going to get in as much grilling as possible. And what could be better than a juicy, grilled steak. Even though I am trying to eat healthy foods and maintain and even lose a few pounds, a steak is irresistible cooked outside on the grill.
Grilled Steaks can be part of a high protein diet as long as it is served with lots of vegetables. Also if you are dieting you want to have lots of protein so that you lose fat and not muscle. So I’m not going to feel guilty having an occasional grilled steak. It’s part of summer! These steaks are large steaks and I only ate 1/2 of a steak. Then I had leftovers for a steak salad the next day. If you have family members or guests who are vegetarians then make them a grilled Portobello Mushroom.
When grilling a steak, how do you know what temperature you should cook the meat to. My husband likes medium rare and I like medium steaks and we have friends who like well done. It’s my opinion that steaks should never be cooked to well done because you have then cooked out all the juiciness. To have a perfectly cooked medium rare steak cook the meat to 135 degrees F. Use a meat themometer to make sure you are cooking to the right temperature. Place steaks on grill and cook on the lst side for 4-5 minutes and until lightly charred. Turn meat and grill on 2nd side for 3-5 minutes or until internal temperature is 135 degrees F. ( 3-5 minutes for medium rare, 5-7 minutes for medium, 8-10 minutes for medium well). Place on the other side of grill, not on heat, with a tent of tinfoil over the steaks for 5 minutes before slicing or serving.
